Taking an african safari takes a little preparation and for first time travelers to this mighty continent, some homework is required before setting off.

We've heard some horror stories regarding ill-prepared travelers who basically forgot to just do the basic preparation and found themselves left high and dry. For example, safari wear... this is such a vital component of your trip yet so many people forget to check.

Preparing For An African Safari

Let's prepare you for your safari in Africa adventure. Forget the wildlife for the moment, you've got to lay the foundation for your trip.

- Travel light... you'll be doing plenty of travelling so don't get too carried away with lots of luggage.

- In summer, take light clothing while in winter, light and heavy...warm days cold nights. Also take a hat!

- Insect repelant is mandatory. Forget it and you're at the mercy of mosquitoes and the like.

- Take sunscreen. Make sure it's a recommended brand.

- If you are traveling on the highways, particularly in South Africa then loose change is a must. You'll be going through plenty of tolls!

- Make sure you have your I.D. with you at all times. Avoid carrying a purse or wallet particularly in urban areas. Always put your I.D. in a safe place before going to bed at night. Some place you'll remember.

Popular Safari Destinations

African lion safaris are always popular. With the african lion coming under scrutiny in recent years with dwindling numbers many people are taking advantage of seeing this magnificent beast in the wild.

Some of the more popular lion safari destinations include the Masai Mara National reserve in Kenya, particularly during the months of the wildbeest migration. South Africa's vast Kruger National Park, Botswana's magnificent Central Kalahari, Chobe and Linyati parks and Tanzania's famous reserves, from the Serengeti to Lake Victoria.

The african lion is not the only famous "jungle icon" you'll witness in this amazing landscape. One of Africa's great attraction is it's landscape extremes. From thick jungle to open plains and waterways, if you are a student of photography then you'll be in your element.

Types Of Safaris

Walking expeditions when possible, are certainly the most rewarding. You'll be under heavy guide protection all the time and generally, will follow well-worn trails close to camp sites.

Mobile expeditions can be equally rewarding given you'll get closer to wildlife from the protective environment of a vehicle. Because of the vast distances in Africa, this is the most utilized way of traveling and in many cases, people will get the opportunity to do a little exploring on foot.

Other types of african safaris include Fly -Ins, which are a little more expensive, canoe, and of course, for more experienced travelers, self-drive adventures.

Remote lands of unspoiled wilderness from parts of the African continent have become the ultimate travel destination for many people.

A safari can be the most exciting holiday you could ever plan. However, with all the excitement of discovering wonderful places teeming with wildlife also comes a lot of dangers. Therefore, good planning is imperative to enjoy both a rewarding and a safe holiday.

After choosing a reliable company to plan your safari with, one of the first things you should decide on is whether you want to go with a group of people or by yourself.

Going together with a group can be more fun, especially if you're the type of person that loves socializing and being surrounded by lots of people. In addition, you also get to benefit from the experience and knowledge of others.

If you've never been on a safari before, seasoned travelers can provide you with useful advice on accommodation, attractions, cuisine and safety issues. Having someone in your group who knows the local language can also be very useful.

However, if you want a peaceful and intimate holiday, you might have a better time on your own. Provided your safety is not compromised and you've booked with a reliable company; a company which should provide proper guidance through your safari tour, check your progress throughout and provide you with a GPS or satellite phone and medical rescue in case of emergency, you should be okay on your own.
If you have been on a safari tour before and have some experience, then you should be aware of some of the pitfalls which could befall a newbie traveling alone.

It's up to you if you want to go it alone, with your partner, or along with a larger group of people. Your trip advisor should also be able to provide you with some advice on whether you are prepared to go alone or not. This will depend on the safari destination you have chosen and the possible dangers you might come across. However, with proper safety measures employed, your African safari should be one of your most enjoyable memories.
