Preparing for an african safari is extremely important. It's not just a matter of packing the suitcase and heading off. There are some important things you need to know. Make no mistake,  Africa can be a dangerous place for the inexperienced traveler but under the guidance of those who live and breathe this magnificent continent day in and day out, safety is high on the agenda. If you play by the rules then your african safari experience will give you a lifetime of memories.

How To Prepare For An African Safari Vacation?

There are several things you can do prior to taking off and your enjoyment of the trip could very well come down to how well you prepare.

Here are a few safari preparation tips you should take note of before heading to Africa:

#1.. Learn as much about the area your visiting as you can. If your vacation includes guides that's fine but you should at least do some of your own homework.

#2.. Consider the time of the year you're traveling. The African wet season can be brutal if you have a dislike for wet weather so check with your travel agent about the African seasons.

#3.. Whether you're traveling during the dry or wet season, pack sun lotions for your skin as well as for your lips. The African sun can be penetrative during the day and if you're going to spend a lot of time in it then consider having sun screen protection.

#4.. Travel light. Too many people make the mistake of trying to pack their entire wardrobe on an African safari vacation which is a big mistake. Traveling light is essential because most times, a safari requires regular moving around and lugging heaps of luggage makes no sense. Take two pair of shoes at the most.

#5.. If your going to be on the move then light clothing is essential. Also pack a sweater because even in summer, temperatures can drop considerably during the evening. Don't forget to pack a hat - not a cap but a hat which also offers protection for your neckline.

#6.. How's your physical well being? If you have any ailments then make sure you see your doctor before you leave. If you require medication have plenty of it to take with you. Also, laws in some countries may be strict on certain medications so make sure you get a clearance in the form of a letter from your doctor to state you require certain types of medication.

African lions spends the best part of their days doing nothing. In fact, statistics suggest at least 20 hours is spent just soaking up the sun and moonlight. So what makes these magnificent beasts such a drawcard for safari seekers?

The Lion's Demise

The african lion's numbers have been a cause for great concern in recent times in fact, there has even been talk of extinction. It's a dirty word in the world of conservation and  while the lion presents as a creature of indestructible dimensions, the sad fact is, the one creature on the planet capable of wiping it out, man, has been responsible for it's dwindling numbers.

Take for example just over 100 years ago, the African lion was around in numbers south of the Sahara desert. Today, it's almost got to the stage where the only place you can see the king of the beasts in it's "natural habitat" are large conservation parks. The reason; man's yearning for progress.

Conflict With Man

The African lion has been in conflict with humans and is losing out badly. It's an unfortunate situation but when progress spreads it's tentacles there are always going to be casualties. The conflict has arisen because of the new settlement areas being created in Africa. With these new settlements comes livestock and as we know, unlike the normal prey of the lion in it's natural environment which play hard to get, livestock such as cattle, are pretty docile animals and an easy and inviting temptation for a lion looking for a snack.

The solution to the problem is a little hard to pinpoint but the good news is, there is some very special work going on by people determined to see the African lion survive the next 100 years.

So is it still worth the trip to Africa to see the lion. You betcha! While the free roaming lion is dwindling in numbers, the opportunity to see the king is always there through planned tours. If you take an African Safari Tour with an experienced tour guide, you wont be so highly at risk.  You could take an African Safari through Botswana, where coming almost face-to-face with the golden giant will be branded in your mind for your lifetime.

One of Africa’s unique and beautiful remote wetlands is The Okavango Delta.  They have an abundance of African animals you could see on your tour, and you are almost guaranteed to always see the Lions.  The Lion is wild and free, and is the highest on the food chain.  Anyone who possesses a spirit of adventure would have to be dying to spend time in its midst.

Amongst the Lions, females do look after many of the hunting duties.  It is not uncommon to see the male lion lounging around, but he still does some hunting.  Usually the female catches smaller animals, and the male pounces when it’s too big for her to handle, like giraffes for example.

Don’t live a life where you have only ever seen Lions at the zoo!  Take an African safari you will never regret or forget seeing the lions up close in person.  There are fears in their communities that they may be in trouble due to survival problems in the modern world, and you don’t want to miss out.

You need to always listen to your guide to ensure your safety.  There will be times when they advise you not to exit the vehicle, and you must adhere to this.  You will probably be asked to keep the windows down until advised otherwise, and when at camp, you will need to stay put until permitted.  If you follow all their instructions, you should have a wonderful and memorable experience without any injuries or issues.

Without trying to sound too over dramatic, the African lion's numbers have dwindled considerably since the 1950's... they number about 20,000 in the wild today. What's causing their demise? Human intervention and progress. Africa's population is on a steady curve upwards and heading towards a billion people. Agricultural programs have been put in place to produce food and locals are quickly learning the art of farming. Nothing strange about that you say but there is a silent victim in all this, namely the African lion.

Can Humans And Lions Co-Exist?

The problem is that in reality, humans and lions co-existing on the same area of turf without a skirmish is impossible. So who suffers? Sure, lions who can stand four feet high at the shoulder and reach weights of 600 pounds would win any physical confrontation. But against technology, they have no chance.

When a pack of hungry lions suddenly notices that there are farm animals on their spread, are they going to differentiate? No way. To them, it's a source of food and they will invariably move in for the kill. The outcome?

The lions have got to go. Extreme measures such as laying poison by farmers reportedly has been implemented and the result is more and more of the african lion's territory is disappearing. You see, in simple terms this is a little like business. Humans have no reason or benefits to gain from co-existing with lions.

What's The Lion's Future?

If things had continued at this pace it's quite conceivable that the only place you would have had the privilege of seeing an African lion may have been in a zoo. The good news is that there are now programs being put in place to ensure the African lion doesn't become another statistic.

Unlike it's Asiatic cousin, the African lion's demise will hopefully be halted. It may well be that they will survive as reservation occupants but it's a lot better than wiping them off the face of the planet.

To those who have been on an African lion safari, the experience in a lot of cases has literally been life-changing. An African lion safari has given people the opportunity to get as close as humanly possible to these noble animals. Can they bounce back? Only time will tell.

Nestled about an hour from Toronto and one and a half hours from the mighty Niagara Falls is African Lion Ontario Safari... a veritable "jurassic park" situated in Cambridge, Canada. Since 1969, African Lion Safari park has been tantilising visitors with the african safari spirit. There's more than 100 species of animals and the park's mission has been to self sustain those species of animals whose numbers are dwindling. And you know, they've been doing this successfully for several decades.

The beauty of African Lion Ontario Safari park is that it is not a zoo in the traditional sense. The animals roam around over a large area and in fact, it is the visitors who are caged. Well, for their own safety at least. You see, park visitors are kept in their cars but get the experience of getting as close to the animals in their natural environment. While the experience of being in the same area as animals such as the king of beasts, the lion, is exhilirating, the educational aspect of a person's visit to the park should not be underestimated.

Did You Know?

African Lion Ontario Safari Park has a multitude of animals as attractions. These obviously include the lion. But did you know they have no less than four southern white rhino. The white rhino population was almost wiped out in the 1800's however, with the co-operation of conservationists and governments, they've bounced back to number about 12,000 in the wild. But there is still a lot of work to ensure their survival and African Lion Safari Park is doing it's bit for the white rhinos of the world.

Education And Entertainment Options

On the visitor trail, people will encounter not only lions but baboons, zebras, white rhino, ostrich, giraffes and any number of fascinating mammals and birds. You'll feel like you are on a real african safari adventure without actually being on the mighty african continent.

There are plenty of entertainment options provided by African Lion Ontario Safari park. For example, visitors are presented with a jungle playground; there is an elephant round up demonstration, a fascinating parrot show and a fun scenic railway tour. It may pay to check with the park on the availability of some of the entertainment as it could be seasonal.

At some stage during the visit those hunger pains are likely to set in and the park is well catered for in the food area with a couple of licensed restaurants.

Whatever your reason for visiting African Lion Ontario Safari park I can't stress enough the educational quality the experience will provide. It's not just about looking and being close to animals in the wild but learning about them. The park continues it's fantastic mission of providing a self-sustaining environment for these magnificent creatures. I'm glad I discovered a little bit of Africa in another part of the world.

Lions can gulp down quite a bit of food as you could imagine. Did you know, a male lion can eat up to 45kgs in one sitting. That's a small person! However, averaged out over time and because lions don't eat everyday, the average intake works out to about 8kgs a day

What animal engenders the most interest and excitement. Well, the king of the jungle of course, the African lion.
